Techniques in Therapeutic Photography:

These are some the most used techniques in therapeutic photography.

Using photographs in traditional counseling

Client centered photography (client photographs outside him/herself)

Client bio-photography (client takes self portraits)

Editing or post processing photographs

Although these are some of the most widely used techniques, there are many more. Photography is a form of art and therefore transcends into an endless array usefulness in the expressive arts. The use of a single photographic image can represent uncountable perspectives and therefore help an individual to interpret his feelings, emotions, thoughts & beliefs.

Images provide symbols:

For example:

I have found that almost every photograph I take of a single tree, is taken from the base of that tree. This can symbolize many things, but in understanding this aspect of myself I know that the tree is something I look at as a form of protection yet also is something I see as overpowering as sometimes represents my own inferiority.

Check out some of your own images. Do you see similarities in your perspective?

BIO

I portray an experimental approach in all aspects of life. Born in California, I was exposed to a variety of cultures and a "freedom of expression" frame of mind. I began my interest in photography (and art as a whole) at the very young age of 7. My first exposure to the fundamentals were through a local photographer and studio in Northern California who volunteered his time to teach a 4H class to interested young photographers. To this day, I carry the ability to focus on the details of nature, which you will see in any of my Macro type shots. Growing up in Northern California granted me tremendous amounts of inspiration through nature and the way we interact with it. I still have yet to find a photograph that expresses my spirit more than the setting sun shining it's warm light through the green hues of the giant ferns that are meek in size under the Ancient Redwoods.

I have continued my interest through the years mostly as a hobby. My childhood and young adulthood kept me transient and filled my albums with treasures of new and exciting places, cultures and people. I obtained my first digital camera in 2001. Since then, I'm not sure you could have found me without a camera close by. I am a very active person both mentally and physically. I love to capture that in my photos as well. I am not a huge fan of posed conventional portraits and seek to uncover the individual emotions and perceptions of each subject. Behavior caught on stills. I also love to capture drive, perseverance and passion that sport photography offers especially in youth.

I have a BA in psychology and a MAC in Counseling. This has helped me to develop my underlying passion for understanding how humans work. In counseling, I specialize in alternative and expressive therapies. I love to incorporate photography into wellness and therapy because it allows people to not only express themselves nonverbally but also often times face their weakness' and strengths. I particularly enjoy handing a child a camera. Their artistic expression through photography is extremely enlightening and fundamentally based on their place in the world around them.

I am a healer by nature. I seek to represent that through artistic expression and photography. Everyone has a story to share. Share yours with me.
